Whether
your child is a competing athlete or not, encourage and support are just
two ways to help your child to be their best. The following are some suggestions:
-
Encourage,
but DO NOT coach!! Talk openly and honestly about your child’s feelings
of their performance or athletic abilities. But leave the “evaluating
of such” to their coach or teacher. Be proud of their accomplishments
no matter how big or small! Remember this is for them, not for you.
-
Support
your child by being:
-
enthusiastic
about their participation in a sport, but keep your “enthusiasm” in
check and remember “Good sportsmanship” is part of any athletic event
and P.E. program.
-
supportive
by encouraging “fitness” for the whole family. Play games, ride bikes,
be a “fitness role model” for your child.
-
helpful
with lifestyle choices. Although this should be self-explanatory,
it isn’t. Getting enough sleep, healthy eating habits, too many commitments,
etc. these are other areas in which your child will follow your lead.
So there again, you need to be the example!
Encouragement
and Support are two ways to help children with sport
activities. In gymnastics to help more specifically:
-
Encourage
physical fitness in any capacity (school, P.E., ride bikes, aerobics
at home, etc.)
-
Yoga
(stretch at home with a video to improve flexibility)
-
Eat
healthy—plan and pack nutritious meals and snacks. Parents can control
what their children eat and they need to take control. Issues of body
composition affect every part of a child’s life.
