Advice for Competitive Athletes

Tips For Handling Nervousness

A little is good. Yes, being a little nervous helps you focus. If you are throwing up because of being nervous, that is a little much. Being nervous a lot usually means that you haven't enjoyed the success of performing your skills enough. If you are a gymnast, do good routines over and over in practice. Then you will feel ready at the meets. If you are a soccer goalie, have your team shoot and shoot some more in practice and when you stop most of the shots in practice, you will be ready for the game. All sports are like that. The more and the better you practice, the less nervous you will be at the competition. Ask your coach for help to get better and better.

Nobody expects you to be perfect. Nobody! You will miss a shot, wobble on a routine, let in a goal. This is normal. Olympic and pro athletes do the same. Mark McGwire struck out more times than he hit home runs! Practice hard, listen to your coaches, and be confident!

Your Parents

They care but they sometimes aren't sure what to do. They are interested in you so answer their questions. They aren't prying, they are interested. They are also making a lot of sacrifices for you. They deserve a thank you from you once in a while.

Your Coaches

They have feelings too. They will want to work with you more if you are nice, smile and are pleasant. AND YOU WANT TO WORK WITH THEM! Some athletes don't like the coach to be watching them. This is what is going to make you better. Everything they say is meant to make YOU better so that YOU can perform better. It is almost all for you. They just want to see you improve. Be glad when the coach wants to work with you.

Your Competitions

You practice a lot so that you can get ready for a meet or a game. Make sure that you work hard and practice how you want to perform, at all practices, not just the couple of days before. Competition can be fun if you practiced hard and are prepared. Competition can be less than fun if you are not prepared.

Believe In Yourself

It is very important to believe in your ability. With hard work in practices, you will get better and better. Practice hard so that you can be ready for the competitions.
